Tips for Preparing for the Chilly Winter Season | SERVPRO of Alamo Heights

residential driveway covered in ice with icicles hanging down from the vehicle parked there The winter season is almost upon us! SERVPRO of Alamo Heights has your back with these helpful tips.

The winter weather in the San Antonio area is anything but predictable from month to month. Rainy days, high wind, sleet and even the occasional snowstorm can take us all by surprise.

No matter what type of weather we are experiencing, our homes are always vulnerable to the different potential damages caused by wind, sleet and ice. Preparing your home ahead of the incoming weather is always encouraged, and we explain how to do just that in our latest blog post!

House Preparations

Depending on what kind of weather is forecast, we always recommend staying home or adjusting plans to avoid traveling when the storm is blowing through. Temperatures that are hovering around freezing could easily turn a simple rainstorm into an icy situation and make travel really difficult.

Instead, stay cozy at home and start collecting your emergency supplies! Find your weather radio and tune into your favorite station.

Locate your extra flashlights and corresponding batteries, your first-aid kit, and safe drinking water and food. Strong wind can knock out power for a few hours or even days, so having a backup heating source ready to use like a fireplace is also good.

Your home is often the safest place to be when a winter storm is moving through the area, but if we do lose power, it can become really cold really quickly. Figure out an alternate location that you can head to if your home gets too cold to stay in, like a friend’s home or the local warming center.

Cleaning Up Afterward

Storms that bring ice and snow can create dangerous conditions outside your home, so walk carefully to avoid slipping on any slick walkways. Assess your home and property for any damage and start clearing away ice and snow.

If the storm brought any amount of accumulating snow, brush it off of the edge of your roof and your gutters. If that snow melts and then refreezes right away, it can quickly lead to ice buildup along your roofline that causes structural damage to your home. You should also take a look at any vents and clear away any ice that has formed around the grates. If carbon monoxide can’t exit safely from your home, it can create a really dangerous situation for your entire family.
