How to Return Home After a Flood | SERVPRO® of Alamo Heights

4/8/2020 (Permalink)

After a flood, many homeowners find that they are ready to return to their homes as quickly as possible and get to work on recovery. While this will hopefully be possible, there are many steps to take to prioritize your safety and prevent further harm in a flood’s aftermath.

After a flood occurs, quick action does make a difference, but it is important to make sure you are taking the right steps to avoid further issues.

Steps to Staying Safe When Returning Home After a Flood

Avoid further safety hazards. The first thing to remember after a flood is to never return home until officials have deemed it safe. There are many dangers such as electrical currents, contaminated water and other hidden hazards that might be present. If you can do so safely, turn off the electricity main to the house, but never do so if it is in standing water.

Air out the home. If there is no rain or moisture outside, open doors and windows to allow air to circulate throughout the house. Though mold growth will have likely already begun, this can slow it down and prevent further damage from occurring. If the house has been closed up for several days, it is wise to let it air out for a bit before you spend any substantial amount of time inside breathing in the air.

Document the damages. Before you begin removing objects or tackling any cleaning projects, take photos to document the damages when you enter the home. If you have flood coverage, this can help you maximize the claim you are eligible for in the aftermath of the flood.

Contact your restoration and insurance companies right away. In the aftermath of a flood, it is wise to let your insurance company know about the extent of the damage right away and contact your restoration companies to begin repairs. Standing water can lead to further damage, so getting the recovery process started as quickly as possible will help prevent any further damages and help your household recover.
