Living in Texas, we know that severe weather can develop quickly and be very intense at times. Texas thunderstorms can include strong winds, heavy rain, damaging hail and even tornadoes. Plus, considering that there are around 100,000 thunderstorms throughout the United States every year, these severe weather events happen often, especially in Alamo Heights.

Texas is a hotspot for seasonal tornadoes. Did you know that Texas recorded the most tornadoes in 2021 out of all 50 states? Living in central Texas, knowing what to do when severe weather develops is very important.

While we can be informed about common weather patterns, we cannot dictate the weather. The best way to combat sudden severe weather is to be prepared for it at all times.

By doing little things like building an emergency kit, having a family communication plan and having a process to deal with potential damages, you can be ready for any severe weather.

Your Severe Weather Communication Strategy

The first thing you should do when severe storms are on the horizon is to solidify your family’s communication strategy. You need to be able to reach them at all times, and you should also have a way to receive alerts and updates from your local weather authorities via a cell phone or an NOAA weather radio.

Refresh your memory on the difference between watches and warnings, so you know whether to be sky-aware or when to move inside and seek immediate shelter.

You also need to discuss your communication strategy with your family, and communicate a common safe area in your home that everyone knows about and can access quickly in the event of bad weather. Even if not all of your family members are home during the storm, it is important to still be able to communicate with them after the weather has passed so you can check in with them.

Packing an Effective Emergency Kit

When packing an emergency kit, you should have the basics for each of your family members to be safe and comfortable for at least 72 hours. The essentials should include non-perishable food, water, first-aid supplies and flashlights with fresh batteries. This kit should be stocked and stored in your safe area at all times.

Your “After the Storm” Checklist

Once the storm has cleared and it is safe to emerge from your safe area, do a recap of your safety plan and a walkthrough of your home to check for damage.

When it is safe to do so, check your property for damage. Inspect your windows, doors and roof immediately, as these areas are more susceptible to water damage first.

If you do end up finding damage in your home, we are here to help. Our trusted staff at SERVPRO of Alamo Heights will be there to clean up and fix your damages. We respond quickly to inquiries and our experienced staff will get you back to “Like it never even happened.”

When the storm is over and your household members have all been marked as safe, make it a priority to do one final audit of your safety plan. Gather feedback about what worked and what needed improvement, and make any necessary adjustments so that you are ready and better prepared for when the next storm rolls through Texas.

If you discover storm damage to your home or business, you can count on SERVPRO to handle the restoration. We’re here 247 to spring into action—get in touch with us today.
