The calendar might flip over soon to fall, but here in Alamo Heights, it will still feel like summer for a while.

Still, as the seasons change, they also usher in new fire hazards. So while we may still be hot, it’s a good time to review fire safety for the new season.

The Fire Pit, the Grill and the Campfire

As the heat begins to fade, more people will be doing outdoor activities—and among those will be increased use of fire pits, the grill and maybe even some campfires.

Knowing where and how to build a campfire is as important as knowing how to put it out. Use a match or lighter to set fire to dry leaves or twigs, then add dry wood and bigger sticks.

Avoid using an accelerant like kerosene or lighter fluid. Build your fire away from structures and other flammable objects.

Make sure to completely extinguish the flames and drown the embers as the right amount of breeze can fan a campfire back to life.

Burning Leaves

Your yard will soon accumulate dry, brown leaves, and many people like to dispose of these leaves by burning them. While drought conditions have eased in Alamo Heights, as well as the greater San Antonio area, this year plenty of caution should be exercised when burning outdoor leaves and refuse.

While burning is legal here, it would be wise to be check with local municipal authorities for burn permits. Always be aware of weather and wind conditions before burning.

Space Heaters

Portable space heaters are one of the most frequent causes of home fires in fall and winter. If a cooler night (or a freezing cold office) has you bringing out the heater, take precautions.

Keep your heater away from anything flammable. Keep kids away from space heaters, and make sure heaters are placed on a level surfaces away from draperies and other flammable items.

Halloween

While Halloween is still more than a month away, always remember that decorations and even costumes can be fire hazards. We’ll talk more about this later!

If a fire hazard should turn from potential to reality in your home, remember the trusted leader in the recovery industry and contact SERVPRO to get your property fully restored right down to the smell of smoke.
