Summer Storm Recognition | SERVPRO® of Alamo Heights

a large lightning strike in a dark stormy sky If storms cause damage to your home or business, SERVPRO of Alamo Heights is on the line, ready to make things right.

Summer is here and with that comes summertime activities that we enjoy. Vacations are on the horizon, warmer temperatures encourage us to go to the pool or beach and days are longer with more daylight so we can spend more time outside—at least, most of the time, that is.

If it seems like we experience more thunderstorms in the summer, it’s because we do! The conditions present in the summer lend themselves to thunderstorm creation, primarily due to increased amounts of moisture and warm air in the atmosphere.

Alamo Heights usually experiences hot and dry weather in August but that doesn’t mean the occasional thunderstorm won’t pop up. When it does, it’s best to be prepared.

Be Vigilant

Just because we have increased storms in the summer, that doesn’t mean we should dismiss them. If anything, we should be more vigilant.

Always pay attention to weather forecasts when storms are predicted and consider canceling outdoor activities and events if conditions warrant it. Local meteorologists are a great resource for storm prediction, and you should listen to them as conditions dictate.

You should also invest in an NOAA Weather Radio to continue receiving information in the event of power loss.

With most thunderstorms, flooding is a possibility, but many times not accurately predicable. If you’re experiencing a thunderstorm, consider staying home and off of the roads.

Most storms have high winds, and a little prior planning can prevent some damage. Trim dead and weak limbs from trees and move outdoor furniture indoors, if possible.

Taking storms for granted and not giving them the full attention they deserve could be deadly! Every year dozens of people die in storm-related incidents.

Be Storm-Protected

If lightning is present, stay indoors and away from windows. Wait 30 minutes after thunder stops before going outside, as lightning can strike 10 miles away from the storm itself.

Don’t swim, shower or bathe if you are in a thunderstorm. Lightning can strike through water sources, so it’s best to wait.

Have an emergency kit already made and know your evacuation route in advance of needing it. In a flooding situation, stay on high ground and never drive through standing water as you don’t know if the road has been washed away. Fast-moving water can easily knock you off your feet, and many times, it’s powerful enough to move a vehicle!

There are any number of dangers that can come into play in a thunderstorm, and it’s always best to be cautious and put things on hold until storms safely pass. If storms cause damage to your home or business, SERVPRO is on the line, ready to make things right again.
