Many people look forward to spring, as it is both naturally and symbolically a time of life and hope—a reminder that winter doesn’t last forever, an invitation to get out again and enjoy the outdoors, and maybe even an opportunity to hit reset on those New Year’s goals. Everything feels fresh and new, and there’s plenty of activity to enjoy socially.

There are also lots of barbecues and seasonal cookouts, family reunions, and graduation parties, which unfortunately also means there’s an increase in fire activity across the country.

In fact, spring sees more daily fires on average than any other time of year. But with just a little effort, you can do your part to prevent fires at home this season.

Let’s look at some great places to start:

The grill. This one gets the most blame, but that’s because it presents the most risk. Grills create a perfect opportunity for fires—beloved though they may be, the combination of flame, heat, grease and gas gives rise to danger easily. Make sure the grill is in proper working order with no leaks, is away from anything flammable (including the house) and is cleaned well between uses. Almost 20% of grill fires are due to poor cleaning.

The fire pit. Gather around and have some lively conversations in the backyard with close friends, but think about safety, too. Never leave kids around the fire pit by themselves. Keep a bucket of water next to the pit. Don’t add leaves or pine needles to the fire, and put out the fire slowly to avoid scattering embers. Bonus tip: If you roast marshmallows, do it over the embers and not the flames—they won’t catch fire and you’ll get the perfect roast.

Chimneys and dryer vents. Have your chimney inspected and cleaned out instead of just closing up til winter, and avoid potentially dangerous buildup of ash. Clean out your dryer’s vent pipe as a once-a-year checkup for trapped or clogged lint, even if you regularly clean the lint trap.
