Weather changes are increasing the likelihood of floods even if you live in an area where excess water is unlikely. But as long as there’s rain, there’s a chance for floods.

Technically, a flood is defined as when two or more acres are completely or partially overwhelmed with water.

But if a flood happens, you won’t be worrying about the legal definition. You’ll be worrying about survival. Keep reading for tips about flood preparation - don’t worry, you don’t need to build an ark.

1. Generator

You need a generator in an emergency. You can’t know know if power lines will survive a flood, or if electric resources will still be available. Several variables influence the type of generator you need.

Water conducts electricity, and flooding means excess water. If you know flooding is imminent, you should move all appliances to higher ground.

2. Flood Risk

Check with your local government and the FEMA website to become familiar with the risk of flooding in your area. Knowing when floods are more likely and what is likely to cause them helps you be prepared. For Alamo Heights and the San Antonio area, start here.

You should also purchase a weather radio and become familiar with the different emergency notifications.

3. Emergency Kit

Is your emergency kit prepared for flooding? You should have extra water because flooding contaminates water sources, put important documents in a waterproof case, and always have extra food supplies. For more on how to pack an emergency kit, read this.

4. Evacuate

Evacuation is a two-step process. First, research your local government’s official plan for evacuation. Secondly, create a family evacuation plan that includes emergency modes of communication. You should practice the evacuation plan until everyone is familiar with the route.

Finally, when the floor waters recede, you’ll want a plan in place for clean up. SERVPRO® of Alamo Heights is always ready to help.
